DISCOVERING BOHO VIBES & UNIQUE TREASURES IN PICTON
Meet Kim Roulston, a local resident and the creative owner (fun thing finder) of Hippy Luxe, a vibrant gift store nestled in the heart of the Dilly.
Join us as we sit down with Kim to uncover her journey and the joy she finds in bringing a touch of whimsical charm to Picton.
Let’s start off with a little bit about yourself
I’m a ‘yes’ person, always saying yes to life and new experiences, which has led to so many amazing adventures. I’ve lived in various places, spending most of my life in Far North Queensland, and I always try to find something positive to take away from each experience - sometimes the bad ones. My mantra? Always look on the bright side!
What about Hippy Luxe, how did it all begin?
I started Hippy Luxe with a $6,000 loan from my youngest daughter. Just as things were picking up, the 2016 Picton floods hit, and my shop was flooded with 6 feet of water. It was a challenging time, but I moved to a new spot in Picton and have never looked back.
My favourite thing is of course our customers, but getting to travel the world looking for unique things for our wonderful customers is a dream.
Why did you choose Wollondilly?
About 10 years ago, my daughter moved to Picton, and I was ready for a fresh start, so I joined her here. The community has been so welcoming and supportive, and I have never looked back. Picton is a wonderful inclusive little town.
What makes your business successful?
The joy and fun we try to impart to our customers and our local residents. We always go the extra mile, aiming to make people smile and feel valued.
Who has been a great influence for you or your business? And why?
My children have been my greatest inspiration. As a single mum, I worked hard to be a role model for them. I wanted to show them the value of kindness, hard work, and finding joy in what you do. Every day, I’m striving to make them proud.
Proudest accomplishment?
My children; amazing, happy, intelligent and kind humans.
What was your first job?
Strawberry packer at a strawberry farm - yum!
What did you want to be when you were young?
That's a funny question depending on the age I was. When I was around 12 years old, I wanted to be a dancer or Gene Simmons' (KISS) wife!
Do you have any new plans for your business you would like to share or a dream for the future?
One day, I’d love to expand online as well as keeping my brick-and-mortar store. It’s a bit daunting financially, but I’m hopeful!
What is your favourite town and why?
Picton, without a doubt! It has such a friendly, supportive community.
What is a must see or do in Wollondilly?
My favourite is Stonequarry Creek. I walk my dog over the little bridge with the stunning Viaduct in the background. It's such a tranquil beautiful spot.
Where do you pick up your favourite takeaway?
My favourite lunch is from Smoke n Grill - cheeseburger & chips. Dinner is Birria Tacos from Moses Barnes' Gringo Cartel.
Other than your own business, which Dilly business is your favourite?
That Office Place in Picton. These guys go above and beyond to help you. They have the best customer service in the town and across the entire Dilly.
Most people wouldn't know that I.....
Started my life as a Hairdresser, then moved into the Scuba Diving world in Cairns.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Touring our beautiful country in a cute little campervan!
